Dryer Vent Fires in Fresno:
The #1 Home Fire Cause
Nobody Talks About
When people think about home fire prevention, they think about smoke detectors and not leaving the stove unattended. Almost nobody thinks about their dryer. That's a serious problem — because in California, dryer vent fires are the leading cause of residential structure fires, outpacing kitchen fires, electrical fires, and candles combined in certain reporting periods.
In 64% of Fresno-area properties we inspect, we find at least one dryer vent issue that constitutes a genuine fire hazard. Here's why it happens, why Fresno is especially at risk, and exactly what to check in your own home.
Why Dryer Vents Catch Fire
The mechanism is straightforward but invisible. Every time you run a dryer, lint — microscopic fibers from your clothing — is pushed through the duct by heated exhaust air. Most of the lint is caught by the lint trap. But not all of it. Some lint makes it into the duct itself and accumulates over time on duct walls, bends, and seams.
Lint is extremely flammable. It's essentially pre-shredded, dry combustible material. When enough accumulates in the duct and the dryer overheats — which happens more frequently as vents become restricted and airflow drops — the lint ignites. The fire travels through the duct and into your wall cavity. By the time smoke appears, a wall fire is already underway.
Why Fresno Is Especially at Risk
Three factors make Fresno-area homes more susceptible to dryer vent fires than most California cities.
Valley dust and agricultural particulates. Fresno's air carries significantly more particulate matter than coastal cities. Some of this particulate enters dryer intake air and adds to duct accumulation, accelerating buildup compared to cleaner-air environments.
Older housing stock with non-compliant duct configurations. California building code has required rigid metal dryer duct (not flexible accordion duct) since the 2002 code cycle. But Fresno has a large proportion of homes built before that requirement — and many were never updated. Flexible accordion duct crushes easily, traps lint aggressively at bends, and is itself combustible.
Long duct runs in single-story tract homes. Fresno's prevalent ranch-style and single-story tract homes often have laundry rooms located far from exterior walls — meaning long duct runs with multiple 90° bends. Every bend is a lint accumulation point.
What Makes a Dryer Vent a High-Risk Configuration
Not all dryer vents are equal in risk. Here's what we look for when we inspect:
- Flexible plastic or foil accordion duct — a code violation in California since 2002 and a significant fire hazard
- Duct runs exceeding 25 feet equivalent length — each 90° bend adds 5 equivalent feet; a duct with four bends has already added 20 feet of restriction
- Improper termination — venting into an attic, crawl space, or wall cavity instead of outside the building
- Bird screen or mesh over the exterior vent cap — mesh screens trap lint and create blockages
- Duct that has never been professionally cleaned — most homeowners have never had this done
What to Do If You Have a High-Risk Configuration
If you have flexible accordion duct, have it replaced with rigid metal duct by a licensed HVAC contractor — this is not an emergency situation you need to stop using your dryer for today, but it should be addressed within the next service visit.
If your duct has never been professionally cleaned and has been in service more than two years — schedule a cleaning. HVAC companies and some specialty services offer dryer vent cleaning for typically $80–$150.
If you have a long duct run with multiple bends, consider having a booster fan installed in the duct to maintain adequate airflow throughout the run.
How We Check It
Our fire safety inspection includes a full dryer vent assessment as Point 07 of the 12-point inspection. We check the duct material, inspect the accessible portion of the duct run, assess the exterior termination cap, and run the dryer to verify airflow. We document what we find with photos and rate it Pass, Advisory, or Action Required.
If you haven't had your dryer vent checked — especially if you've lived in your Fresno home more than two years — book an inspection. It's one of the most consequential checks we perform.
